“I AM” …. Where does this name of God come from? And how does it apply to me today?
God is described in many ways in the Bible. He is called: “the One Who was, Who is, and Who is to come.” He’s known as Jehovah, Lord, Messiah, and Savior. But in Exodus 3:13-14, God gives Himself a name. He simply calls Himself, “I Am.”
Moses is in the wilderness and sees a bush burning with fire but not being consumed. He draws close to this bush and begins to hear the voice of God speaking from this bush.
As Moses hears God instruct him to go back to Egypt, the place he had fled from 40 years prior – Moses has a lot of apprehension. He’s understandably afraid. He had been raised in Pharaoh’s palace as the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, and yet he was actually born the son of a Hebrew slave. He had killed a man who was being harsh with the Hebrews and then when it was discovered, Moses ran. He ran far enough away that he thought he would be safe from Pharaoh and never be found.
But God knew where Moses was. God had a plan to use Moses to free the entire Hebrew nation from slavery. And this is the moment that God reveals His plan to Moses… and Moses honestly seems afraid and starts to question Him.
Have you ever been there? I have.
Moses questioned his own abilities. He questioned whether or not Pharaoh would let God’s people go. He even questioned whether or not the Hebrew people would listen to him. So he asked for a response if the people asked who it was that had sent him to them….
God reveals who He is to Moses by simply saying, “I AM WHO I AM.” And then God says to tell them “I AM” has sent him.
“I AM” ???? Yep. Was God there in the past and would God be there for them in the future? He was and He would be. But the truth is, the past is gone and the future isn’t promised. All we have is HERE and NOW.
Just like God revealed HImself to Moses that day. God wants us to reveal Himself to us in THIS moment. Right where you are today.
If you’re feeling alone. Scared of the future. Uncertain about what is happening in your life. It’s okay… and you don’t have to do it by yourself. The God of the Universe, your very Creator is with you in the HERE and NOW.
