The 4 Important Filters for Knowing if an Idea is Worth Pursuing

As entrepreneurs, we tend to have ideas. And normally a lot of them!

  • ✦ Starting a new business
  • ✦ Shifting to a new direction
  • ✦ Offering a new product
  • ✦ Fill in the blank…..

How can we know if an idea is from God or from ourselves?

  • ✦ Scripture
  • ✦ Prayer
  • ✦ Fasting
  • ✦ Counsel

Scripture
  • Run it through the filter of God’s word
    • ✦ If the idea you’re having is going to cause you to do something that is contrary to God’s word, the answer is no.
    • ✦ For example – if it will involve cheating, stealing, lying, etc. – those are an obvious no

Prayer
  • ✦ Ask God for confirmation if the idea came from Him.
  • ✦ Prayer isn’t just you talking with God – it’s a conversation… expect God to give you an answer.
  • ✦ pray an honest, humble prayer to God… something like “God, I think this is the direction you want me to go and if it’s not, please stop me”

Fasting
  • ✦ When Esther was being told that she needed to do something to save God’s people, she had a choice to make about whether or not she would go before the king uninvited … which could result in death. Most would say that wasn’t a good idea!
  • ✦ They spent 3 days fasting and seeking God. I believe this intentional time of prayer and fasting gave Esther the direction she needed and the idea she needed on how to approach the king – ultimately saving her people.

Counsel
  • ✦ Ask godly people who you can trust to give you guidance
  • ✦ If the trusted people in your life are all against an idea, it doesn’t necessarily mean that God isn’t telling you to move forward… but it does suggest that you should seek God more and ask for confirmation using the the methods we talked about – Scripture, Prayer, and Fasting
  • ✦ There are plenty of examples in the Bible where the “crowd” was wrong so be sure that the people you are seeking counsel from are also personally seeking God

Scripture From This Episode

Consulting Scripture

Hebrews 4:12 ESV

For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

2 Timothy 3:16 ESV

All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness…

Asking God for Confirmation through Prayer

Psalm 25:12 ESV

Who is the man who fears the LORD? Him will he instruct in the way that he should choose.

Psalm 32:8 ESV

I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you.

Proverbs 3:5-6 NKJV

Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.

Fasting for Guidance

Esther 4:12-17 ESV

12 And they told Mordecai what Esther had said. 13 Then Mordecai told them to reply to Esther, “Do not think to yourself that in the king’s palace you will escape any more than all the other Jews. 14 For if you keep silent at this time, relief and deliverance will rise for the Jews from another place, but you and your father’s house will perish. And who knows whether you have not come to the kingdom for such a time as this?” 15 Then Esther told them to reply to Mordecai, 16 “Go, gather all the Jews to be found in Susa, and hold a fast on my behalf, and do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. I and my young women will also fast as you do. Then I will go to the king, though it is against the law, and if I perish, I perish.”[a] 17 Mordecai then went away and did everything as Esther had ordered him.

Seeking Counsel

Proverbs 11:14 ESV

Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety.

Proverbs 15:22 ESV

Without counsel plans fail, but with many advisers they succeed.

Proverbs 24:6 ESV

For by wise guidance you can wage your war, and in abundance of counselors there is victory.
